Internet Addiction
Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), has not been formally recognized by the latest addition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fifth edition (DSM-5). However, it is a social issue which is debated worldwide due to the alarming prevalence rates.
As with other forms of addiction, internet addiction is associated with a release of dopamine in the brain. This is a “feel good” neurotransmitter active in the reward centres of the brain. As a result, the use of the internet takes precedence over normal day-to-day activities, impacting relationships, work, school, etc.
