Signs and Symptoms

Although magic mushrooms as considered non-addictive, a psychological dependence may develop. The psychological reactions can be risky, as people will use it as an escape from reality.

Side effects may include the following:

> Objects appear to breath

> Paranoid delusions
> Psychosis

Overdose Potential

Psilocybin mushrooms are very low in toxicity and would therefore require large amounts to be fatal. However, taken in large doses it could cause severe side effects including violent behaviour, suicidal thoughts, psychosis or convulsions. Other factors to consider is mistakenly taking poisonous mushrooms. If extreme nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal cramping is experienced, seek immediate medical attention.

Withdrawal

Due to no physiological symptoms of addiction, long-term abusers of mushrooms may experience depression, insomnia or flashbacks. However, little is known about long-term risks. But the lack of known risks does not indicate that it is safe. Some hallucinogens may increase the risk of persistent psychosis.

> Self-help organizations – Talking with others who also have a disorder have been proven to be very effective.
> Therapy – Behaviour therapy or cognitive behaviour therapy is a proven evidence based therapy teaching skills to reduce the urges. Find a licensed practitioner.
> Medications – Studies suggest that some medication may be effective for the treatment of gambling addiction. Speak to a psychiatrist specialised in addiction treatment for an evaluation and recommendations.
> Treatment programs – Many in-treatment and outpatient programs can assist with a gambling disorder.
