The Benefits of Acceptance in Recovery

Acceptance what does it mean and how can Acceptance help you in your life today?

Acceptance is the answer to all my problems today.

When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation – some fact in my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment.

Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in our world by mistake. Until I accept myself, my situation, and my life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy.

I need to concentrate not so much on what happens in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and my attitude!

Acceptance is the answer to all my problems today

From a young age I knew I was different I mean what normal 12-year-old kid breaks his hand with a broomstick cause he does not want to write a standard 5 exam (Self-Will) yip that was me and you see this obsession I had with not writing that exam escalated over the years into Skate Boarding then it was the BMX I had to be the best (Obsession) later it went over to alcohol and finally drugs and believe you me I gave it a pretty good shot and being the best druggie out there so much so that after a 17-year addiction I ended up on streets.

See as mentioned I knew that I had a problem. It was different for me, there is a big difference between knowing you have a problem and ACCEPTING that you have a problem. So on 12 October 2019, I accepted I had a problem and I needed a shit load of help, in treatment I practised acceptance in every aspect of my life and I still do today.

I was in treatment for about two weeks when my family wanted to move me to another facility when I received the news I was upset and some self-pity resurfaced I thought that they wanted to move me far far away as I was an embarrassment for the family for a day I was dwelling in self-pity and negativity

Then I accepted it I accepted that whatever needs to happen will happen, and here is the magic of accepting the situation……. (and my family's view on things accepting that it was me, myself, and I that messed up my life accepting that I will go where I need to go because I accepted I have a disease and I need help accepting that I will go where ever to get the help I needed to live a life free from active addiction….)

You cant stop the waves but you can learn to surf

By accepting the situation and not fighting it as if by magic everything changed two days before I was to be moved I was called into the office and told that my family changed their minds and I was going nowhere…….the magic of acceptance!!!

So let's look at the snowball effect accepting that situation had on my life, I believe that if I did not accept it I would not be here writing this but I did and what happened is I finished my program, started working as a volunteer, got my addiction counsellor certificate and today I have 773 days clean I’m working fulltime as a Recovery Coach helping others accepting life for what it is......... shit, I’m even writing this blog and all of this because I made a conscious decision to change my attitude and accept that one situation for what it is......... By accepting the situation and not fighting it as if by magic everything changed two days before I was to be moved I was called into the office and told that my family changed their minds I was going nowhere......... the magic of acceptance!!!

I practice acceptance daily and I can write a book full of examples on accepting that every situation in life is exactly what it is supposed to be I just need to decide to accept it for what it is……..and in doing this life and all its daily challenges get easier life is much more peaceful.

Acceptance is the willingness to experience life as it is, a moment of acceptance is a moment of genuine freedom

I want to challenge you today to start practising acceptance in your life and see what happens I mean what have you got to lose? Think of it this way by changing your attitude and accepting just one thing in your life for what it is the road you are on today might just change and maybe just maybe you can live a happier more peaceful life……Give it a GO!!
